About
WHY WE ARE DOING THIS
Last summer I had a persistent thought in my head – “Retire at Easter and do a 500 mile sponsored walk for charity.”
The thought developed and finally took the shape of the project you now see on this website. This is the problem when you have thinking time whilst walking our Border Collie X (Cleo) and 2 Great Danes (Pearl and Saffi)!
So much did the thought develop, my husband entered into the plan and we bought another Great Dane puppy (Nero) to train up to be fit for the walk. We didn’t want to tire our other girls, (Pearl and Saffi) who would be 6 and 5 respectively when the walk commenced. Cleo we knew would walk for miles and still want more.
When I tentatively mentioned the idea to my family, colleagues and friends I rather expected it to be met with some laughter and labelled ‘A mid-life crisis’. However, this was not the case and I can honestly say, I have received wholehearted support from the outset.
So we have now arranged a 500 mile off-road walk, incorporating coastal paths, railway and canal walks, commencing in Aberdeen on Sunday 1st August 2010.
WHY WE CHOSE THESE CHARITIES
Cancer Research UK
Most people are touched by this disease in some way, either family, friends or colleagues, and we think many are willing to donate to this worthy cause.
I lost both my parents to Cancer and various friends over the years; I have friends who have survived, thanks to the work done by Cancer Research UK in their constant quest to find new treatments and cures for this cruel disease.
Rotary
This international organisation lends its support to many and various charities. They help the young, elderly, infirm, community projects at home and abroad as well as international emergency aid in addition to running their own fund-raising activities.
Dogs Trust
As the dogs will be playing a large part in this walk, we thought that we should also raise money for a non-breed specific canine charity. As we got Cleo as an eight week old puppy from Dogs Trust, this seemed to be a good choice.
